The\npurpose of the mission mirrors that of the port it serves. It seeks to advance\nglobal connections among the world of seafarers, one personal contact at a\ntime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concern for each international seafarer\u2019s well-being and the family structures they represent is central to their work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Roussel, Port Chaplain for the Reserve, La. location, serves the river parishes of the ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Gospel is the major drive in what we\ndo,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This motivation is carried out in a variety\nof ways. Among them is the Christmas gift program of the port outreach which\nbegan in 1962 by Rev. John Vandercook.&nbsp;\nIn the New Orleans port, he first met the physical and social needs of\nseafarers. His work led to the establishment of a not-for-profit corporation in\n1965.&nbsp; The sound footings still provide volunteers\nof all ages opportunities to participate in outreach, specifically during the\nChristmas gift program.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, children\u2019s Sunday school classes\nat the First Baptist Church of Reserve filled 120 Christmas stockings. The\nministry plans to give 1,000 gift stockings away during a 6-week period this\nyear. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are doing much better now than prior to\nthe pandemic,\u201d said Roussel. \u201cPeople want to get involved.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to donations from corporate\npartners, law firms, financial institutes, churches and individuals, the\nmission can include Bibles, books, journals, engraved key chains, personally\nwritten Christmas cards and candies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roussel recounts a visit he had on a ship\nwith a mixed crew of 13 Chinese and eight Burmese crew members. As a rule, Chinese\nand Burmese seafarers speak little English. The chief officer was very busy but\n\u201chis face lit up immediately\u201d with excitement that someone came to see them. When\nthe chaplain delivered the gifts he explained the reason for Christmas, a\nmessage that with prayer will sail with them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is exciting once you see they realize\nit is for them,\u201d said the chaplain. \u201cYou get a chance to communicate with\nsomeone without them talking. They were really appreciative to know someone\nloves and cares for them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Orleans is Louisiana\u2019s only\ninternational container port. It is located about 100 miles from the Gulf of\nMexico, on the Mississippi River. It is the sixth largest cruise port in the\nUnited States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from the cruise industry, the more\nquickly cargo moves, the better for business. Turn-around times for cargo vessels\nare from 12-24 hours. Contact with seafarers is extremely important if you seek\nto care for them.
