Ship visiting is normally a primary contact\nfor meeting seafarer\u2019s needs. The opportunity for face-to-face contact is\nslimming quickly as fear of the spreading epidemic rises. Regardless of\nlocation, North American centers are wrestling to provide care in new ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mood on ships has changed according to Chaplain Steve\nFinnesy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeafarers are seriously concerned about exposure, viewing those\nwho board their vessel as a potential carrier and are apprehensive to get off,\u201d\nsaid Finnesy in Tampa, Fla. where crews of five cruise ships are on lockdown\nfor two weeks and other vessels need to be contacted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will start wearing a mask for their comfort when I board\nvessels.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seafaring is a work of unforeseeable variables. However, responding\nto a pandemic is new for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeafarers are conditioned to hardship,\u201d said Kent Williams who\nmanages a center in Fort Vancouver, Wash. But passing through an invisible,\nglobal health threat is tough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outreach is changing daily with new directives from political\nand religious governing bodies. Port Authorities, non-profit boards, the Coast\nGuard and ship\u2019s captains are weighing in. &nbsp;Fluctuation is the new certainty.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fort Vancouver center is taking a 2-week pause since all of\nthe volunteers are over age 70 and ship visits are suspended. Seafarers remain\nonboard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to find a balance between the mandates from Christ and\na level-headed response,\u201d said Williams, a 16-year chaplain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne way we can continue to care is to create a ditty bag-like\noutreach,\u201d suggested Williams. If small packages like the Christmas give away\ncould be delivered to the gangway, at least the seafarers would know we care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Port chaplains share a targeted common mission. They can brainstorm\nwell. The deep commitment they share for this specific population motivates action\namid the variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Galveston Seafarers Center\u2019s Port Chaplain, Karen Parsons,\nidentifies with the seafarers concerns and is in high gear with new methods of\noutreach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to continue to minister without our physical presence,\u201d\nshe said. \u201cDeveloping an extensive correspondence ministry is possible. We can\nsend care packages, write letters, and offer prayers for seafarers and their\nfamilies. If we are deemed non-essential people for boarding ships, we can send\nour message with essential ones.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feedback from Galveston concurs with Tampa and others that the\nseafarers are very concerned about their home countries and nervous about\ndisease transfer with agents and others who board their ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Philippines announced strict home quarantine measures for\nhalf of its population, the shutdown of transport networks and ordered\nbusinesses to close or operate remotely, according to Reuters on Monday.\nPhilippine President Duterte said, \u201cMake no mistake, we are in the fight of our\nlives.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has led to added anxiety and extended contracts for at\nleast two Filipino seafarers in Port Manatee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to let seafarers know that they are not alone,\u201d Parsons\nsaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prayer is an act of care. Taking a step to arrest fears and\nbring comfort is within our ability.&nbsp;\nParsons has a practice of praying a blessing for vessels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBlessing their ship is really important to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maintaining positive relationships with others who board vessels\nis important. This can be a means of reaching seafarers with \u201ccare\u201d data as\nwell. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris O\u2019Brien works in Gulfport, Miss. where Dole, a regular\ntenant, has denied all shore leave. The owner of three ships from Mexico which\ndock Port Manatee has also decided no shore leave is available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Brien independently visits the ships he oversees. He continues\nto use Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp. These social web options work well for\ninteraction and may be avenues for others to explore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although other seafarers may have shore leave, coordinating\ntransportation and a comfort-level for seafarers to disembark seems sketchy at\nbest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how do we care for people with such fluctuating\ncircumstances? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Know that our challenges never surprise God and that he is with\nus in our struggles. Show daily consideration for others onboard to calm their fears.\nView new challenges as opportunities. Find ways to keep our senior volunteers\nengaged electronically with seafarers. Stay in touch with each other.
